MDF Powder Coating – Tailored Solutions for a sensitive substrate

Long established as an industrial standard in metal coating and still something of a hidden champion in wood processing, MDF powder coating is increasingly gaining ground as a high-quality alternative to liquid coatings and foil finishes. This progress is driven by continuous technological advancements—particularly in the field of low-temperature curing powder coating systems.

As a specialist for demanding substrates, TIGER offers comprehensive expertise and tailored solutions for MDF applications. Due to the material-specific characteristics of MDF, every project is assessed individually and developed in close collaboration with the customer.

MDF Powder Coating – A process with many variables

MDF is a non-conductive or only partially conductive, inhomogeneous natural substrate. Factors such as moisture content, board quality, pre-treatment, application technology, and curing conditions have a significant impact on the final result. Accordingly, successful coating requires a carefully coordinated overall concept—from board selection to quality control.

TIGER supports its customers throughout the entire process—with expertise in powder coating systems, application, curing, and quality requirements. Each solution is always tailored to the specific application and project.

Whether for kitchens, bathrooms, offices, shopfitting, or furniture for residential and technical use:

As a thermosensitive wood-based material, MDF requires a particularly well-coordinated approach to powder coating. TIGER provides the necessary know-how and system solutions. Implementation is always carried out in close consultation with the customer.

We would be happy to advise you personally on the possibilities for your MDF project.

Added Value for Furniture Manufacturing

Modern MDF powder coatings open up new design, functional, and economic opportunities—especially in furniture manufacturing. Low-temperature powder coatings with curing temperatures starting at around 130 °C reduce the thermal stress on the substrate while enabling high-quality surface finishes.

Full Design Freedom

Powder coating enables seamless, all-around coating—even on edges, handle profiles, cut-outs, or complex geometries. Unlike foil-based solutions, this results in homogeneous surfaces with a high degree of freedom in color, texture, and gloss level.

Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness

Highly reactive systems for wood substrates are characterized by low melting points and short dwell times in the oven. This reduces energy consumption, shortens process times, and allows for high throughput. Easy handling and minimal training requirements further enhance economic efficiency.

Durable and Easy-to-Clean Surfaces

Powder-coated MDF surfaces offer excellent scratch and abrasion resistance—even on edges and horizontal surfaces. They are also resistant to common cleaning and disinfecting agents. Alcohol-based products do not damage the surface, ensuring long-term hygienic cleanliness.

Durability Meets Sustainability

Sustainability begins with product longevity. High-quality, durable surfaces and timeless design significantly extend the product life cycle. MDF powder coating meets all these requirements and offers clear advantages over alternative coating methods.

Environmentally Friendly Technology

Powder coating is entirely solvent-free and produces no VOC emissions. Energy-intensive exhaust air treatment is not required—an advantage for both the environment and sensitive applications such as museums, libraries, or archives.

Any powder that is not deposited can be largely recovered in modern systems.

Please note that MDF powder coatings are manufactured on a project-specific basis. Due to the individual formulation and customization, we produce exclusively to order and do not offer stock items. Accordingly, product-specific minimum order quantities apply.
