What is Series 44?

TIGER Drylac® Series 44 is a polyester-based powder coating developed specifically to make graffiti, spray paint, and marker ink easy to remove from coated metal surfaces. The coating produces a smooth, dense, low-porosity surface that is both water- and oil-repelling, so paint sits on top of the film rather than soaking into it. That makes routine, repeated cleaning possible without abrasive methods and without the color shift, gloss loss, or surface dulling that affects untreated or unsuitable coatings after multiple clean-ups. Series 44 can be used either as a stand-alone, one-coat finish, or as a clear top-coat applied over an already powder-coated base layer to add anti-graffiti protection to an existing color and finish. Effectiveness has been confirmed by Labor Dr. Kupfer in Berlin, using test methods aligned with those of the Gütegemeinschaft Anti-Graffiti e.V. (the German quality association for anti-graffiti systems), including evaluation after numerous repeated cleaning cycles.

Where it's used

Series 44 Anti-Graffiti is specified wherever publicly accessible metal surfaces are exposed to repeated vandalism, mostly in architectural and construction environments, and need to be cleaned often, without visible wear:

  • Metal facades and cladding panels in public or high-traffic areas
  • Underground and railway construction (platforms, paneling, structural elements)
  • Noise reduction / noise barrier paneling alongside roads and railways
  • Rail vehicle components, including interior paneling and seat frames
  • Clear protective top-coat over existing weather-resistant powder coatings

Primary substrates: Aluminium, steel, and galvanized steel. Selection of the appropriate pretreatment method depends on the substrate type and intended application environment - please refer to the pretreatment table in the Product Data Sheet.

Certifications and Quality

The anti-graffiti performance of Series 44 was independently verified by Labor Dr. Kupfer, Berlin - a publicly appointed and sworn expert for graffiti removal and graffiti prevention. Four powder-coated aluminum panels (clear and pigmented finishes) were subjected to 15 repeated cleaning cycles, based on the stress test protocol (Prüfzyklus 1) of the Gütegemeinschaft Anti-Graffiti e.V., Berlin, using four different graffiti media (black, red, and blue spray paint, plus a blue permanent marker) and the cleaner Biolon G (Silco-Tec). Across all 15 cycles, the sprayed paints were removed without visible residue on every panel, scoring near the maximum rating of 100 on the association's evaluation scale. Surface gloss and appearance remained largely consistent with the original, unweathered state throughout testing, leading the laboratory to rate the anti-graffiti performance of the tested Series 44 coatings as very good.

Application and Processing

Most Series 44 powder coatings are custom formulated products developed for Corona-Application, with some items being also available from stock. Custom-order products are also available in Tribostatic formulation on inquiry. Detailed processing instructions are provided in our General Application Guidelines.

For smooth glossy finishes from Series 44 we recommend a film thickness between 60-80 µm. Staying within the specified range for your chosen product is important for both appearance and performance.

It is essential to measure substrate temperature, not oven air temperature, and to stay within both the minimum and maximum curing times. Under- or over-curing can affect mechanical properties, visual appearance and warranty validity. Full curing parameter charts are available in the Product Data Sheet!

At a film thickness of 60 µm, Series 44 yields a theoretical coverage of 10.4 to 13.8 m² per kilogram, depending on the specific gravity of the color chosen. Specific gravity ranges from 1.2 to 1.6 g/cm³ and varies with pigmentation: lighter colours and whites typically sit at the lower end of the gravity range and therefore cover more area per kilogram, while heavily pigmented or metallic variants sit higher. For practical planning purposes, coverage at thicker film thicknesses will be proportionally lower. The TIGER Coverage Calculator provides detailed guidance on estimating coverage for specific products and film thicknesses and is available for free.

Series 44 powder coatings should be stored in dry conditions at a temperature of no more than 20 °C, away from direct sunlight and extended heat exposure. Storing the product outside these conditions, particularly in warm or humid environments, can affect powder flowability, electrostatic behaviour, and surface quality after application. Each box is labelled with a use-before date, which should always be observed; powder used beyond this date falls outside the product specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

As Series 44 does not have GSB or QUALICOAT certifications it is not officially labeled as a “facade” product, like Series 29 and Series 68 are for example. However it fulfills all necessary weatherability requirements to qualify as a “durable” product in both one-coat and topcoat applications and can therefore also be used in architectural environments.

Yes. Given, that a new formulation including our Anti-Graffiti Additive is developed any existing TIGER product can be adjusted to offer Anti-Graffiti properties. Note, that due to the additives behavior the final finish will always turn out to be glossy. If you are interested in a custom Anti-Graffiti formulation reach out to us!

Coated surfaces must be cleaned regularly - at least every 12 months in standard environments (C1–C4) and at least every 3 months in aggressive environments (C5). Use only GRM-approved cleaning agents and methods: clean water with pH-neutral detergent, soft non-scratching cloths, and no abrasive or solvent-based cleaners. For Series 44 we specifically recommend "Biolon G" by Silco-Tec and "Graffiti Clean Spray" by ECON-AIR. Rinse and seal after every cleaning. More details about this can be found in our General Cleaning Recommendations!

Yes. Series 44 can be applied to steel and galvanized steel with appropriate pretreatment. For exterior steel construction, TIGER also offers the TIGER-SHIELD two-layer system for enhanced corrosion protection.

Yes, with additional requirements. In C5 environments (per EN ISO 12944-2) we specifically recommend a 2-layer system using a TIGER Primer (Series 270, 271, 272, or 273). Regarding pre-treatment, quality regulations set out by GSB International and QUALICOAT must be followed at all times to achieve reliable results. For aluminium we suggest an etch rate of at least 1.5 g/m² or pre-anodisation as pretreatment, while for steel substrates we see hot-dip galvanizing as the optimal pretreatment option. As Series 44 holds no official certificates for C5 applications, corrosion performance and suitability for your indivdual case still need to be verified through independent testing. Alternatively, one can also use a 2-layer, Qualisteelcoat-Certified TIGER architectural system (Steel only).
