TIGER presents its own EPDs
These days, products, buildings, processes and more are increasingly being examined and evaluated from an ecological perspective - as part of this, powder coating is also being given attention. The carbon footprint of powder coatings varies and depends on several influencing factors (e.g. color, gloss and of course also production). So, how does one gain access to reliable information in that regard? As sustainability in general and carbon emissions especially increase in importance in large industries like construction and automotive, offering information about a powder coatings carbon footprint has become a necessary service to assist decision-makers in evaluating their products and projects from an environmental perspective. Until now TIGER has been using EPDs provided by the Association of the German Coatings Industry – these are now being complemented by another of our very own EPDs!
But first – what is an Environmental Product Declaration?
An EPD is a document in which the environmentally relevant properties of a specific product are mapped in the form of neutral and objective data which is based on real data of the considered products covered in the Environmental Product Declaration. This data covers, as far as possible, all the effects that the product can have on its environment. Ideally, the entire lifecycle of the product is taken into account. TIGER EPDs take a cradle-to-gate approach, meaning that the environmental impact of the powder coating is viewed from the raw materials to the factory gate. Additionally steps at the end of the products live cycle (Demolition, Disposal...) are also covered. In the construction industry, EPDs form an essential basis for professionals such as architects and planners to be able to plan and evaluate buildings holistically. The CO2-footprint of the products can be determined from the EPD. It is referred to as GWP (Global Warming Potential) and is given in kg CO2, eq/declared unit.
Why we release our own EPDs
As mentioned already, the EPDs for polyester, hybrid and epoxy used by TIGER are prepared by the Association of the German Coatings Industry which represent average values for all companies involved. In order to provide more detailed information for certifications such as DGMB, LEED, BREEAM and others, separate EPDs have been calculated for TIGER-Drylac® Polyester/HAA Series (Series 14, 29, 58, 59, 67, 68) produced in Austria. These make it much easier to evaluate buildings and also have a lower GWP compared to the association EPDs. All EPDs are available in our Download Area.
Powder Coating | GWP (kg CO2, eq/kg) |
