Touch-Up Paints - A Way to Repair Powder Coated Surfaces
An article by TIGER Coatings and Duthoo Coating Concepts
Powder Coating offers durable and mechanically resistant surfaces. This makes it the first choice among industries requiring long-lasting parts and components. However, this doesn’t mean that nothing can ever happen to the coating. Over the years various environmental factors, small mistakes in production, or simply by its use can leave a product´s surface with chipping, scratches, abrasion marks and other abnormalities. Fortunately, there exist products, which, depending on the extent of the damage, can save coaters the effort of redoing a coating all over again.
Touch-Up Paints are liquid coatings, that are specifically formulated to match a certain powder coating product and therefore allow to precisely repair damages that would otherwise not be fixable with powder. This potentially saves a lot of resources and allows to manufacture products with more efficiency and less waste in the process. Depending on the application these products can come in the form of Pens, Bottles and Spray Cans.
How do I get my touch-up paints?
When ordering touch-up paint, finding a precise match for the powder coated surface is crucial. This can be done by providing the specific product ID code for the powder coating, which might already exist in a liquid coating database, allowing for quick production and delivery. If an exact match isn't available, a physical sample of the damaged surface can be provided so experts can accurately replicate the color and finish. Once developed in the desired format, the touch-up paint is ready to be shipped directly to your premise.
How to apply
Applying touch-up paints requires careful preparation and adherence to specific steps to achieve optimum results. Regardless of whether one uses a pen, bottle, or a spray can, the surface should be cleaned thoroughly and be free of rust, dirt, and oil. In specific cases the area should be pretreated with a primer to enhance the paint's adhesion. In any way, the product that contains the liquid paint must be shaken well before use to ensure a consistent color application.
Touch-up pens are ideal for smaller damages and scratches, offering precise control. Bottles are better for slightly larger areas, allowing for a more generous application. Sprays cover the most extensive areas but require even, sweeping hand motions while applicating to avoid drips and uneven coverage. Detailed instructions tailored to each product are usually provided upon purchase.
Where are touch-up paints used?
Touch-up paint can be used for various applications and industries. It has proven its use in industries as sun shading, furniture, bikes, windows, doors, gates, fencing and so on. All surfaces composed of aluminium, steel, PVC or other metals are eligible. However, these touch-up solutions are particularly effective for small, more superficial damage where a precise and controlled application is required. When damage is extensive, such as large areas of peeling coatings, deep scratches, or significant rust, touch-up paints are insufficient. In such cases, the entire surface needs to be fully stripped of the remaining coating, properly pretreated and afterwards recoated to restore its integrity and ensure long-lasting protection.
