Chemical Resistant Powder Coatings for Furniture Applications
Everyday cleaners and disinfectants keep our loved ones protected from germs and bacteria. However, what protects the powder coating surface finish from these solvents? How do you know if you are choosing the correct coating?
Generally, epoxies tend to be more chemical resistant than standard polyester blends but not all epoxies are formulated or tested the same. The proper formulation of a chemical resistant resin base with top quality additives is the foundation of a durable coating. In combination with the resin base, having vigorous testing procedures ensures the coating lasts in its intended environment.
TIGER Drylac has state-of-the-art laboratories that are equipped to test a multitude of scenarios -one of them being chemical fume hoods where cleaning agents such as bleach, anomia, and disinfectants are tested. The purpose of chemical fume hoods is to contain vapors, gases, and fumes inside of a controlled environment cabinet while protecting its users during testing.
In addition, the standard test method for effects of common chemical’s is the ASTM D1308 chemical resistant test. Which covers the results of surface alterations such as discoloration, loss of adhesion, change in gloss, blistering, swelling, and softening. The tested methods used are Spot Test and Immersion Test.
- Spot Test -place approximately 10 drops of test solvent on substrate allow to stand for agreed upon time ( 5 min, 30 min, 1hr, 24hr, 7 days) then wipe off with a soft cloth and examine.
- Immersion Test- Immerses substrate to a depth of 50% at a temperature and length of time agreed upon time. ( 5 min, 30 min, 1hr, 24hr, 7 days) Take out of solvent and wash with distilled water. Then examine.
